How we count

Who did the reading

AI research helpers did much of the reading: they went through the lists and noted which products each one names. Some sources were seen only through search summaries, not the full page. Those count half, as weaker evidence. Nobody read every list by hand.

Weaker evidence

A search snippet only, or a page that looks sponsored, counts half. The product page shows it as “+ 1 weaker”.

The Trending group is counted from articles and trend reports about TikTok and Instagram, not from the apps. One point per website. It is separate from the main score and never outranks the picks. Viral is not the same as lasting.

What we skip

No star ratings, no Amazon reviews, no invented scores, no health claims. Articles carry short, attributed owner quotes from Hacker News, checked word for word. The hand-counted owner tally is still to come, and stays hidden until then.

Most photos are stock images and often show a similar item, not the exact product. All photos were resized, some cropped, and colour-corrected, except the BenQ lamp photo, which is shown as the photographer took it.
